Leto Proveni stirred in his sleep. The sun was warming his skin and he could feel the tall grass around him tickling his bare skin. He didn't want to open his eyes because he knew were he was. He had been enjoying such a nice dream that he didn't want to see the mess he had caused. So he laid there enjoying the cool breeze on his flesh, and listening to the birds chirp.
"I can't just lay here forever." Leto muttered to himself. Soon enough though he knew that he had to get up. If someone saw him here like he was he would be put in jail or killed on site. He sighed opening his crystal blue demon eyes. The brightness of the sunlight made him blink frequently. When his eyes adjusted he looked at his body. His hands and torso was covered in blood. He knew perfectly well that his face was covered in the coppery thick liquid as well. He hated the thought that he had just ripped apart someone but knowing it was one of the evil people that made him this way calmed his mind.
He sat up and looked around. Luckily enough for him the person who he had killed was nowhere in sight. Although he had woken up many times in a similar situation the sight of a ripped up person wasn't something he could get used too.
He stood up and discreetly searched for his clothing. He didn't want anyone to see him naked and covered in blood. His eyes spotted the crumpled button up shirt hanging from a tree. Of course he didn't expect to see it there but he doesn't ever remember removing them either. Leto walked up and removed it, inspecting it. There was a small tear in the shoulder area where he had obviously not gotten it off in time for the change. On the ground right under the tree were his pants. They were in one piece and untouched.
Grabbing both garments he headed for a near by stream to wash off before getting dressed. He followed the sound of rushing water. He reached the bank and set down his clothes before jumping in. The cold water enveloped him in ice. It felt like needles to his flesh. Scrubbing the blood from his skin he ignored the uncomfortable feeling.
He stepped out and pulled on his pants and shirt. As Leto buttoned up the last few buttons on his shirt his sharp ears heard a noise. It was a faint rustling in the undergrowth of the trees. He paid closer attention. The longer he listened the more the rustling sounded like footsteps. He stepped behind a tree to hide the bright white button up he was wearing. Hopefully no one would see him.

Janus had been sent to District 9 to investigate a string of mysterious killings. He couldn’t very well object, because he needed to be as nice and willing to follow orders as possible. It was all part of the plan. However, Janus didn’t think that meant he would be trudging through wheat fields in the middle of nowhere. He’d been dropped off by a hovercraft somewhere near the outskirts of 9, and he’d been wandering for hours. The sun was just barely rising when he’d started his journey, and now it was high in the sky. He kept going in what he hoped was the same direction. It was rather easy to get lost, because everything looked exactly the same.
Finally, Janus found what he was looking for: the torn shreds of a person. The sight would’ve repulsed anyone else, but he’d seen enough in his time on this god-forsaken earth that nothing really got to him. He simply set up a signaler so the hovercraft could come retrieve the body, and kept on his way. This time, however, he actually had something to follow. Whatever it was that killed the poor dead thing behind him had seriously wrecked the standing grain, cutting itself a jagged, but clear, path through the fields. Janus had a feeling that he’d find whatever it was soon enough.
It wasn’t long before he found a clearing. The only thing in the clearing was a tree, but Janus could tell that someone had been there recently. The grass was trampled in a pattern that resembled walking, and he could see the blood. Whatever it was, Janus was close. He heard a sound off in the distance, and instantly perked up. He hefted the gun he’d been toting into position, ready to fire at whatever it was that was killing these people. But nothing came. Janus listened for a minute, realizing it was the sound of a stream. He mentally chastised himself for not recognizing the sound earlier, and gently lowered his gun.
Whatever it was may have been at the stream. Janus made this rationalization and set off towards the sound. As he neared, he saw a flash of white step behind a nearby tree. Janus quietly lifted his gun and began to circle around until he had the white thing in sight. When he finally saw it, though, he lowered his gun. It was just a person, wearing a white shirt. Janus wanted to apologize for pointing a gun at him, and to ask him if he knew what was killing the residents of District 9, but damned that Snow, he couldn’t. So he settled for slinging his gun over his shoulder and putting his hands up in a symbol of surrender.

Leto ears perked up as the footsteps drew closer. Soon he was seeing what looked like a dark haired man holding a gun and it was obvious his hiding behind a tree was pointless. His white shirt must have given him away. The guy was circling around. Then he stopped lowered his gun and raised his hands in what looked like surrender.
Leto wasn't sure if he should trust the man or not. Not very many people had weapons readily available and even if they did it was illegal. The new Capitol had prohibited them because of the Rebel action. They were trying to prevent uprisings and more kidnappings. Of course there were a few people permitted to register hunting weapons, this man could be one of them.
Leto was very glad he had finished cleaning off all the blood before this guy had come close enough to see. The only thing that he was worried about the man seeing was the tear in the shoulder of his shirt. So he started coming up with an explination.
I was taking a leisurely morning hike because the weather was so nice. I heard noises and growls and was frightened. So I... I ran. My shirt caught a tree and ripped. I heard footsteps and thought it was whatever I heard and hid. Brilliant! He knew it was a fool proof alibi. He figured the man wouldn't find any holes in his story.
He stepped out from behind the tree and held up his hands as well. He didn't want the man to think he was armed or dangerous. At the moment he wasn't. Lowering his hands slowly he walked in the man's direction. As he approached he saw that he was clean cut and very military-like. It made him wonder. Is he a rebel? Will he be my next victim?
"I'm sorry. I thought you were some kind of animal. I was taking a hike because the weather was so great and heard all kinds of loud growls. I took off. I'm glad your a human." Leto sighed in relief. He was a terribly great actor. He had to be to get away with all the stuff he did.

Listening to the man’s explanation, Janus perked up. Maybe he’d heard whatever had killed the guy Janus had found earlier. He smiled, putting his hands down, and slowly walked towards this guy. Every fiber of Janus’s body told him to be suspicious of this man before him, but his brain was tired, and wasn’t really in the mood for listening to his instincts, a normally deadly mistake. However, this man looked trustworthy. He looked like most people in District 9, tanned skin, golden hair. Janus smiled again, and pulled a small blade from his boot. A wicked glint came into his eyes as he advanced on the man.
That’s when he saw them. The eyes. He’d heard of people in the Capitol having such strange eye colors, but never of someone from a District having them. Janus faltered a moment, quickly running through possible scenarios in his head. This man was not to be trusted, not with those eyes. He was lying, Janus knew. Janus wasn’t accusing him of committing the murders, but this man hadn’t just been walking. He knew more about what was going on then he let on. Janus quietly raised the blade, poised to attack. Just a quick draw of his arm, and release.
The blade flew through the air, a slight metallic whir followed by a sickening crack. The blade had impaled itself in the bark of the tree behind the man, and a small, bright red apple had fallen to the grass between them. Janus set down his gun, a dangerous move, he knew, but it was all part of the test. He took a running start, and leapt, slamming into the trunk of the tree. Fortunately, he didn’t have to climb far to retrieve his knife. Clenching the hilt between his teeth, Janus carefully walked out on a branch, and dropped down to the ground, putting himself closer to the stranger than before.
He took a step back, a hint of anger in his eyes, and picked up the apple. He used the blade to slice a bit off, popping it into his mouth. He did the same, this time, offering the slice to the stranger as a peace offering. Didn’t want the guy knowing Janus was on to him. Janus plopped down, his back resting against the tree. Of course, his gun was now about five feet away from him, but a ranged weapon wouldn’t do him much good at such close range, hence the knife. When it came to arms, Janus was far from stupid. He’d been with the rebels long enough to know his stuff, like the fact that this guy was hiding something.
Janus himself was generally hiding something, but there were no superiors around, so he didn’t have to play nice, and when it came to being an Avox, people usually figured that out pretty fast.

The man smiled. At first it was welcoming but he lowered down and grabbed a knife from his boot and the look on his face was ominous, almost evil. He approached closer and Leto was suddenly sorry he was no longer the demon beast that he was earlier that night. Fear filled his stomach as he realized that he was defenseless.
Then the man stopped for just a pause and his face sobered quickly. Leto had seen that look before. The stunned look of a person who had just witnessed his demon eyes for the first time. The man raised the knife like a skilled killer and Twack! it hit the tree behind him with a loud thud sending a crimson apple to the ground.
Leto's eyes reflexively closed. Did he miss? He wondered as he looked down at his body. It was clear that the blade had come nowhere near his body. Was the man warning him? Why hasn't he said anything? The mental questions kept coming. This man had not said one word since Leto had set eyes on him.
Then just as suddenly as he stopped the man jetted forward and leaped onto the tree like some agile animal. He pulled the knife from the tree placed it in his mouth and continued up and out on a branch. He walked like a majestic cat before dropping down in front of him. The look in his eyes was an intense anger. He then sat down and began slicing a piece of the apple to eat it. As he popped the piece into his mouth he realized at once why the man didn't talk. He had no tongue, this man was a Avox.
Leto knew that there was nothing wrong with the apple but he wasn't inclined to take it. The man seemed to aware. Like he knew something was up. Although this man was just as hurt and altered by the old Capitol as himself, Leto felt that he was around for a different reason than just a good hunt. He decided on a whim to just take the slice to familiarize himself.
"I don't mean to pry but I noticed you are an Avox. You must hate the Rebels for what they did to you. I can understand. My name is Leto Proveni." He gave a genuine smile deciding to ignore the malice that this man emanated. He offered a hand to shake in friendship.

The guy had taken the slice, so Janus didn’t think he was aware of anything. This put the Rebel’s mind at ease, until he started talking. He introduced himself as Leto Proveni, and then said that Janus must’ve hated the Rebels for what they did to him. At the time that Leto had said that, Janus was just about to pop a new slice of apple in his mouth, but the words made him falter. But only for a moment. Janus knew he mustn’t show Leto that his words had alarmed the Avox in any way. So he only slowly nodded before gently placing the apple slice in his mouth, the blade going in with it.
He pulled the blade out from his closed lips, the slice of apple staying where it was. He chewed slowly, as if deep in thought, and took that extra effort to swallow. Since he had no tongue, Janus couldn’t swallow as easily as everyone else, and he always had to force food down his throat. The guys in the mess hall back at base called him a human garbage can, because Janus would eat anything. What they didn’t know was that Janus couldn’t taste any of it. Most people knew he was an Avox, but they never seemed to make the connection.
Every slice of the apple he was holding that Janus put into his mouth, he couldn’t taste a bit of. The one thing about being an Avox that Janus hated was that he couldn’t ever taste the crisp juices of an apple ever again. He could try his hardest to remember the taste, but flavor was something you had to experience to have. He could still chew, which he was happy about because that meant he didn’t have to force himself to swallow food whole, but he’d give anything to taste again.
But something Leto said had sparked Janus’ interest. When he’d said that thing about the Rebels, Janus knew his cover wasn’t blown. Even with the gun that Janus had been carrying when he’d found Leto, the District man still hadn’t made the connection between the Rebels and Janus. This was good, this was very good. It made it all the easier for Janus, because that meant he wasn’t going to have to pump the guy full of bullets, which meant less paperwork to account for loss of ammo. Paperwork meant dealing with his bosses, and Janus was not in the mood to do that right now.
He settled for spearing the apple to the ground and turning to look at Leto. He started sizing up the man with his eyes, thinking about how difficult it would be to incapacitate him and get back to the signaler. If he was lucky, the hovercraft hadn’t shown up yet. Janus didn’t think it wouldn’ve, because he hadn’t been with Leto all that long, but the Rebels weren’t always consistent with their times on everything. Sometimes it would take hours to perform a simple retrieval, and others they’d have stacks of stuff ready in less than a half hour.
Janus kept coming back to Leto’s eyes. Something about those icy blue orbs was throwing Janus off. And what he didn’t know was that he was staring, right into the eyes of another man.
