A lot of the people he considers friends are only friends with him because his father is a victor, which makes him want to train even harder for the Games, and why he goes to sleep every night hoping it's his turn to be kidnapped.

I was thinking that since Eben has this aversion to girls, since his mother died, that he might be in the closet. Layke and him can plot and maybe Layke could show some genuine interest and Eben realizes that he likes guys instead. Idk, just throwing that out there.

Damon is out there and gay. He could show Layke true love. Damon would do anything to protect Layke and help him to find love. Damon doesn't have anyone else who he has in his life to care for. Yet they could be rival lovers as they fight to win the games with Damon's intent on living to kill his brother with his own hands.
