Ryder doesn't do love. He's too paranoid, afraid that people are constantly judging him. Ryder is afraid that whomever he'd be in a relationship with would be unhappy because he's such an inadequate partner, and that they would want to leave him. So he figures it's best just not to get close to anyone.

Friends aren't exactly Ryder's favorite people. People in general aren't Ryder's favorite people. He isn't the kind of guy to go out of his way to make friends, but if he has them, he'll try to keep them. And a friend to help his self-esteem issues is probably exactly what he needs.
